About AARP Essential Health Insurance

By Renee Raymond

  • Overview

AARP Essential Health Insurance is only one of the many plans that the company has to offer. It is geared toward the 50- to64-year-old age group and designed to offer a very low premium while still providing enough coverage for a lot of people. It is a fixed cash hospital indemnity plan which differs from some of the more traditional insurance plans offered by other companies.
  • History

The AARP company has been serving seniors for many years, and their commercials are advertised extensively on television. The company is sound and has much to offer, so many seniors feel that it is a good choice to supplement other insurance that they already have. Since the products that it offers are geared to people 50 and over, there are large numbers of people who can enroll in their programs if they choose to, and the company no longer offers insurance and other products only for elderly individuals.
  • Function

The main function of the AARP is to offer people who are 50 years of age or older a range of products and services. These are designed to help them have lower bills and keep more of the money that they have worked so hard to earn throughout their lives. With products for those between 50 and 64 and another group of products for those who are over 65 there is something for a large portion of the population that is offered through the company.

  • Misconceptions

The largest misconception about AARP and its Essential Health Insurance is that it is only for the elderly. Many of the people who the company offers its services to are not elderly at all. Another popular misconception is that the company only offers one type of health insurance. This is also untrue, as the company offers a lot of different health insurance options as well as dental and vision care plans. Plans that provide for medical equipment and for prescriptions are also offered.
  • Benefits

There are a host of benefits that come with AARP membership and the company's Essential Health Insurance plan in particular. The largest benefit for people who are interested in this plan is that it can be purchased at the age of 50, so there is no need to go without insurance coverage if a person retires early or loses his or her job. Since Medicare does not offer options until a person is much older, having some other type of coverage is often necessary and very important, and AARP offers that.
  • Warning

If a person decides that AARP Essential Health Insurance is the right choice for him, there are some things to be aware of. It is not available to all people in the 50 to 64 age group at all times and in all states, so it may not be possible to get it when someone wants or needs it. It is also important to know that it is a plan that offers much less coverage than many other plans, which is why it is called 'essential.' It's only the basics, but certainly better than nothing when it comes to health insurance coverage.
