What Is The Act College Entrance Exam?

The ACT college entrance exam is taken by high school students looking at a future in college.

The American College Test (ACT) is a test given to young high school students with a desire to attend college after receiving their high school diploma. The test has been a widely accepted college entrance exam since its beginning in 1960. ACT, Inc. administers the test and is an independent, not-for-profit organization. ACT is governed by a corporation and a board of trustees. The corporation members are teachers elected to their position and the trustees are educators and business people chosen by a committee from the corporation. The ACT national office is located in Iowa City, Iowa.

To register for the ACT college exam, you need to complete a registration form online or by contacting your local high school guidance office. Once you've registered and paid a small administration fee, you'll be informed of the test date, time and location. The ACT measures your critical reading, math problem-solving, and writing skills. Your scores are then tallied and made available to you for submission to the college or university of your choice.

There are 215 questions on the ACT. The highest possible score is 36 and the average score, nationwide is 21. Subject areas covered on the test are English, math,

reading and science reasoning. The ACT administrators suggest that you first answer all of the easier questions and then go back and answer the harder ones. You can use logic to eliminate incorrect answers and then make an educated guess for the correct answer. Your score is based on the number of questions you answer correctly. And bcause there's no penalty for guessing it's n your best interest to answer every question. The test is timed, however, there is almost always enough time for everyone to finish.

The ACT website also has helpful information about the college planning process, online college applications, a financial aid calculator, and how to decide on a career that fits you.

High school students looking at a future that includes college are wisely completing the ACT college entrance exam. It's a great way to let colleges know your abilities.
