It is hardly painful in the Japanese style. A person might say they feel a little prick or sensation. They might say it felt like a very mild insect bite. But I do have quite a few patients who fall asleep during treatments, so I know it's not hurting them. For the vast majority of the patients it's very relaxing.

I usually put in a needle for at least three minutes in one area and usually the longest I'll put it in will be 30 minutes. It depends on the person, how bad the problem is and the style of acupuncture you're using. If I'm treating pain, a person should experience 50 to 100 percent relief during treatment.
