Acupuncture has been around for over 2,500 years in Chinese culture. But as American consumers, many are not aware of what goes on during a trip to the acupuncturist. As a form of treating illnesses, ailments and addictions using needles and points on the body, many Americans automatically attribute pain to the process, but further research into the subject would inform the consumer that only about five percent of acupuncture goers ever report pains from the needles.

One of the best ways for a doubting consumer to feel more comfortable when approaching a new process as acupuncture involves information. Many experts will advise consumers to ask as many questions about the process before taking the big step. Also, when an interested consumer is looking for a possible acupuncturist, someone who isn't afraid to speak about their profession and the process is a very key detail.

Dr. Xiaodont Han graduated from the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Hunan Province of China. He is licensed in the state of Florida and is a physician with the Oak Hollow Acupuncture Clinic. Han said that before you even begin to ask a potential acupuncture about a meeting, you should always make sure that he or she has received the necessary schooling.

"Professional schooling is necessary to train the physician to recognize the condition of the patient and to select the right points to make the body heal faster and respond as it should," Han said. "Acupuncture treatment abilities range from head to toe. Almost any kind of condition ranging from severe headache to insomnia, and from excessive gastrointestinal problems to immune deficiency can be treated."

As credible a practice as acupuncture is, many want-to-be acupuncturist practice without receiving the necessary or proper schooling. Han said that consumers should be aware of these types of practitioners because of the potential danger they could be.

Some of the areas that an acupuncturist should be aware start with the human body. Anyone who claims to be a certified acupuncturist should have keen knowledge of the human body and information on any ailments that you have. If by any chance the person doesn't sound like he or she knows what they are talking about, this could be a sign that they don't.

"Much of the U.S. now requires four years of training in acupuncture school," Han said. "I was mostly trained in China, so I know the par of standard is rising here."

Another good detail to be aware of when searching for an acupuncturist is the price. Of course all consumers would love to be able to get the best acupuncturist in town to handle their ailments, but sometimes, choosing the best possible practitioner could be a huge financial burden. So in these types of situations, many experts will advise the consumer to choose an acupuncturist that fits well into their comfort range as well as their price range.
