Depression can be due to many factors. It's a very complex problem. Hormones can obviously have something to do with depression. A person may have an internal problem that's not hormonal. There are so many factors. People can be depressed for so many reasons. You've probably been hearing about how steroids can cause depression and a variety of other emotional problems like being hyper irritable. So hormones play a big part, but there are also other factors and you, as an acupuncturist, have to determine what the primary cause of depression is.
There can be problems in the digestive system that affect depression. I've specialized in studying digestive disorders in China in medical school. A lot of people don't associate digestive problems with depression, but most commonly there's a hormone problem, so I'm not ignoring that. But sometimes there are other factors that you have to look at that might be affecting a person's emotional well-being. It's my job to figure out what's wrong with them.
