"We normally see the progression of eating disorders when adolescents go through transitions," says Sondra Kronberg, a clinical nutrition therapist specializing in eating disorders. She is on the board of directors of the National Eating Disorders Association and is the executive director of NEDA Long Island.
"We see it around 10 or 12 when girls are starting to develop and move from elementary to middle school. We also see it again when they move from junior high school to high school. An eating disorder is just a symptom of some anxiety or stress. When changing from school to school, we see accelerations in the number of eating disorders. We are also seeing it in younger and younger children, because a lot of fitness is being brought to children through the media."
