BIOGRAPHY

Alberto Moravia, journalist, novelist, and short-story writer, was born into a middle-class family in Rome, Italy. His father, an architect, was Carlo Pincherle, and his mother was Teresa de Marcanich Pincherle. He spent a lot of time in sanitoriums as a child because he was stricken with tuberculosis of the leg bones. He worked for several years as a foreign correspondent for LA STAMPA and LA GAZETTA DEL POPOLO. He was fired from the latter following the publication of LE AMBIZIONI SBAGLIATE (THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE) in 1935. Throughout his life he contributed to various magazines.

Moravia published his first novel, GLI INDIFFERENTI (TIME OF INDIFFERENCE), when he was 22. The novel, LA CIOCARA (TWO WOMEN), is his most famous work. His autobiography, ALBERTO MORAVIA'S LIFE, was published in 1990.

Alberto Moravia died in Rome in 1990.
