Tips and helpful information about the African Grey Parrot.

In feeding your African Gray Parrot you will need to have a knowledge of the foods that will keep him very healthy and active. Sunflower seeds at one time were considered a perfect food for the parrot, but that alone does not provide enough nutrition and the African Grey likes variety in his feed. Sometimes a parrot like a person will want to eat one particular food that is not necessarily healthy for him.

It won't be long after you purchase your parrot that you will discover he can be fussy and picky about what he eats especially if you have purchased a parrot who has been used to another diet. He will take awhile to accept change in his feed as these parrots can be very particular.

I always put some fresh fruit and vegetables in his cage early in the morning when I first wake up and I am sure to remove any food that he has not eaten so I might avoid spoilage. It is necessary to use detergent and clean the dish that this fruit has been in as it can have residue from the fruits and vegetables which would not be healthy for your African Grey Parrot.

African Grey Parrots always tend to like melons, peaches, grapes, apples, cherries and strawberries. I would advise removing the pits, seeds and any other matter that would be easily digested by the parrot. When serving him vegetables I always cut them into small enough pieces for him so that he does not have to try to handle a large piece of a vegetable. Parrots love the tops of beets, carrots and also radishes, so you might use these vegetables for your dinner table and then wash thoroughly the green parts and give to your African Grey Parrot.

It depends on the owner of the parrots and their preference as to the feeding of seeds or pellets. I tend to mix the two and I go to a pet shop and buy nutritionally complete pellets and seeds.

I also add a vitamin mix that my veterinarian has recommended for a supplement to his diet. There are various vitamin supplements on the market today that a parrot owner can choose the one best for his parrot. I like to sprinkle a powdered vitamin on his fruit and vegetables early in the morning and he loves the taste. I always thoroughly wash these items and while they are still damp I sprinkle a little of the vitamin powder on them. I have found that these various vitamin powders do not have a taste or odor to keep the African Grey Parrot from liking them.

Be sure to buy a high quality vitamin powder, as the cheaper ones tend to have a little less quality. I tried the oil based vitamins and he just would not touch the food with this mixture on them. Be sure that the vitamin based vitamin supplement is only for your parrot, do not use any vitamin supplements meant for other animals.

My African Grey Parrot loves to have his little treats plus loves the attention I give to him when feeding these treats. He loves taco chips, some forms of nuts, and also raw corn cut from the cob. I will not feed him chocolate or avocados even in small amounts as some do as I am afraid of digestive problems.

If you will feed your African Grey Parrot healthy and nutritionally you will have many, many years of love and enjoyment from this wonderful, attractive and very intelligent bird.
