There are many different things that can cause a dog to become overly aggressive. It could be that the dog never learned how to socialize or the dog could have just been poorly bred. There are different types of aggression displayed by dogs. Some is due to fear, some due to domination, and then there's some due to predatory and territorial instincts. Most forms of aggressiveness can be corrected with training.
There are early signs that a puppy may become an aggressive adult dog. Simple things like allowing your dog to growl at you or snap will only reinforce the aggression. The way to correct a dominant dog is to show him his place in the pack. The owner should always be the leader in a dog's eye. Laying down the law at an early age can prevent it from becoming a problem later on. With proper training, a dominating dog can be taught that his owner is the leader. This training will also counter most territorial aggression because the dog won't claim a yard as his own property, but will instead view the yard as his owners.
Fear biters are more difficult to deal with. These dogs are usually shy or fearful of strangers and will wait until a person is walking away and then will attack. They learn from an early age that if they chase after the person they are afraid of and bite them while their back is turned that they stand a better chance of avoiding confrontation. Fear biters aren't always abused animals a lot of them just have a bad temperament. Most of them are born shy, nervous and fearful. These types of biters are considered to be poorly bred animals and a lot of times will end up in shelters or being destroyed. If an owner decides he wants to work with this type of dog, he should be aware that he might have to use a muzzle when walking the dog in public, and take precautions to prevent the dog from biting people. There are other ways of training this type of dog, but it takes a lot of time. You may want to find a professional trainer to assist you.
