Allergies and asthma affect millions of people around the globe in a variety of ways and circumstances. Most of those afflicted suffer nothing more than mild cold symptoms in the spring and shortness of breath on days with severe smog. However, even the worst sufferers could improve their symptoms with a few simple adjustments to their daily regimen.

Exercise is an under appreciated treatment that can quickly improve the symptoms of asthma. Although exercising with asthma can be painful and difficult, over time it generally alleviates asthma symptoms. Asthma is so debilitating because it keeps the lungs weak and unable to undergo heavy exertions; aerobic exercise counteracts this basic component of asthma. Aerobic exercise increases the strength of the entire cardiovascular system, but most importantly for chronic asthma sufferers, it increases the strength of the lungs. Although aerobic exercise is the most difficult part of a workout for an asthmatic, it is also the most important. Exercise generally does not directly improve the symptoms of allergies, but in both asthmatic and non-asthmatic allergy sufferers, exercise indirectly helps by making the lungs stronger and better able to deal with the symptoms of both diseases.

The recent introduction of air filters on the consumer market is great news for allergy sufferers. Although originally marketed as a way to filter second hand smoke out of the air, air filters are also a valuable investment for people with asthma and allergies. Allergies and asthma can be aggravated or caused by the dust that collects in the air of homes. Air filters effectively filter out this dust at a very reasonable price.

Dust in the home can also cause problems in more ways than just floating through the air waiting to be breathed. Standard mattresses and carpets often act as dust traps that release clouds of particles into the air at the slightest touch. Vacuums often cause more problems than they fix by spraying as much dust into the air as they clean up. Removing carpet in favor of hardwood flooring is often a very effective way of reducing allergy symptoms in the home. If problems with allergies and asthma are especially bad while sleeping, a possible solution is switching to a waterbed or air mattress that won't hold in nearly as much dust.

Most people are aware that flowering plants and trees can wreak havoc on allergies when outdoors. In this case, there is often not much that can be done beyond removal of the nearest blossoms and hoping for the best. However, there is still hope beyond anti-histamines in this case. Although severe allergies typically are life long, mild allergies often are temporary. If allergies set in upon moving to a new area, it is quite common for them to taper off after a few years when the body gets used to the new environment and its various allergens.

Allergies and asthma can be very serious, but many lifestyle choices can make living with them a little easier, especially if they are only mild. Generally, sufferers can never completely get rid of their symptoms, but they can be alleviated greatly.
