Do you have a runny nose? Sneezing? Stuffy head? Is it an infection or allergies? Many people develop symptoms that make them feel sick and lead them to believe that they have an infection and are in need of antibiotics. Yet, allergies have to be treated differently. Here is a breakdown of symptoms to differentiate the two.
Infections are caused by bacteria or viruses. Viruses are responsible for things such as the common cold, influenza and even AIDS is caused by a virus. Fever is a sure sign of an infection of some kind. Below are other symptoms of an infection. When there is an infection present, you must see your doctor and get prescribed antibiotic medication.
Signs of Infection:
-Fever
-Thick yellow or greenish drainage from the nose or dripping in the throat
-chills and achiness (associated with fever)
-fatigue
-congested or wet cough
-sore throat pain
Allergies are a result of our body's defense mechanism. Our immune system identifies an allergen, such as dust, or mold or pollen. Our bodies release chemicals called histamines. Histamine is what causes the symptoms of allergies.
Symptoms of allergies:
-sneezing
-stuffiness
-itchy nose and eyes
-watery eyes
-runny nose with clear discharge
Although there is no cure for allergies. There are medicines to relieve the symptoms. Some are over the counter, such as Benadryl, which is an antihistamine. Or you may need a prescription from your doctor. Other medications help block the chemicals that cause allergic reactions to begin with. Allergy shots are also available for people who suffer from allergies. This is called immunotherapy or desensitization. They help you build up a tolerance to the allergan culprits, which lessens your allergic reactions. They can, however be expensive and take years to complete.
