If you know anything about the Arctic Region of Alaska, you know that it is sparse. There's not much there except land, water and animals. There are several ways you can make your way up to this area. Some are better than others. Here are some tips.

• Car. This is not probably the best way to get to the Arctic region, but it is possible to get there by car. However, there is only one road that goes up to this area, the Dalton Highway. And that road isn't paved. If you're driving there, be prepared for quite a haul. From Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay on this gravel road is 415 miles.

• Dog sled. This is really the only other way by ground to get to the Arctic region. It's unlikely that you can find a dog sled team, and this method generally takes longer than other methods. But if you can experience a dog-sled ride, this would most certainly provide quite a ride to one of the coldest spots on earth.

• Airplane. This is really the only practical way of getting to Alaska's Arctic Region. You can dart up to Barrow from Fairbanks for a fairly reasonable fee. Many major airlines have actually gone so far as to establish package deals. You can take a one or two day tour of the region, including airfare and a guided tour for less than $500. Some packages are more expensive than others. If you want to get one of these tours during the summer months, be sure to make your reservations early, because demand is higher during this time. Some different tours of the area include: Frontier Flying Service (907-474-0014), Wright Air Service (907-474-0502), Gray Line of Alaska (206-281-3535), Bering Air (907-443-3030), Alaska Village Tours (907-276-7568), Alaska Airlines Vacations (800-468-2248), and Arctic Air Guides (907-442-3030). By taking a plane up to the Arctic Region, you will get to see Alaska in a unique way. You can see the terrain from above.
