Schmincke is a well known manufacturer of oil paints. They have been known in Europe for decades for some of the finest oil paints. And these oils, made with a unique formula that blends it with resins, is their finest. The resin(a patented formula which was designed in the nineteenth centurary)assures better drying qualities, a more stable film and more luminosity in your painting.
What I mean by a stable film- the resin creates a greater paint film durability. The addition of resins to the paint gives it more flexability so less cracking.
What I mean by luminosity-the resin content of the paint permits more refraction of light.
What I mean by better drying- There is less oil content as some of the oil is displaced by the addition of resin. Therefore less yellowing and contains little "free oil" as found in other brands.
The Schmincke oil paint is also a volume-neutral paint and causes tension-free drying. In this combination-evaporation of resin solvents and polymerization of the binding oil. The result is a more balanced drying in the paint layer, which makes it less prone to crack(disfiguring you beautiful work)and posesses a more uniform drying rate for all the colours. Basicaly a faster overall drying than regular oil paints.
I must say I'm impressed with the way they manufacture their products as well. Schmincke paints have a more finely ground texture to them due to the use of stone mills. Most brands are ground on steel mills these days, but stone rollers permit a better control of temperature. This is an important factor in the manufacturing process. For the end result is a richer pigmantation that goes farther and can be applied in the thinnest layers. This can be very true for the transparent colour range. They also age every batch before putting it in tubes.
As described in Schmincke's "Introduction to Oil Painting"-Mussini oil paints have been discribed as buttery, less oily, less gritty and very consistant in their working properties. This is partly due to their practice of aging every batch before filling it into tubes.
The Mussini paints and prices(These are in Canadian currancy)- The Mussini paints come in seven different series and most colours are in 35ml tubes.
Series#1-is $10.95 for 35ml tubes of all colours, 55ml tubes of whites for $12.40 and 120ml tubes of whites for $24.15
Series#2-is $14.85 for 35ml tubes of all colours, 55ml tubes of whites for $16.65 and 120ml tubes of whites for $31.75
Series#3-is $17.95 for 35ml tubes of all colours, 55ml tubes of whites for $20.75 and 120ml tubes of whites for $35.10
Series#4-is $21.40 for 35ml tubes of all colours.
Series#5-is $37.95 for 35ml tubes of all colours.
Series#6-is $46.25 for 35ml tubes of all colours.
Series#7-is $49.95 for 35ml tubes of all colouts.
Schmincke also provides a Mussini "Super-Sampler"-an introduction set of six 10ml tubes of Mussini paint for $26.30
Well that is just about it for Schmincke's Mussini paint. Hope the information helped and I have to say I love working with these paints and I plan to paint with these more often since I found them.
Now go and paint!
