A baby shower is a joyous way to show the expectant parents how happy everyone is about the forthcoming arrival. A close gathering of family and friends come together with the soon to be mother, and more and more often, the father also, for an afternoon or evening of good food, discussion about the baby, and some good, old-fashioned fun. To help you in your planning, I have put together a list of some old and new games to get your next baby shower off to a great start.
Just ‘How Big’ is the Expectant Mother
All that is needed is a roll of toilet tissue and a good sense of humor. Have the expectant mom stand up so everyone can take a good look at her expanding belly. Each guest tears off the length of tissue that they believe equals her belly. When everyone is finished, have the mom measure her belly with tissue paper for an exact count of sheets. The closest wins.
Baby Scramble
Unscramble the baby-related words. Answers below:
cafipier, peadisr, rkrcoe, tobetsle, tpsi-pu, ofcefe, dnigmht-edefsnig, naytrimet hloctse, rlteoslr, rcbi, gicihhhar, senioes, enbnot, niutbng, doletdr, tretehe, tartel
Answers: pacifier, diapers, rocker, bottles, spit-up, coffee, midnight feedings, maternity clothes, stroller, crib, highchair, onesies, bonnet, bunting, toddler, teether, rattle
What’s in the Bag
Place the following baby related items in a small canvas tote bag, preferably one that has a pull close opening, so that nobody can see what is inside. One pacifier, a diaper pin, cotton ball, Q-Tip, baby sock, baby barrette, teething ring, a rattle, and ear plugs. Allow each person 30 to 60 seconds to place their hand in the bag and feel the items. They must then write down what they think was in the bag. The person with the most correct answers wins.
Name That Baby
With the letters only in mom and dad’s first names, see how many names you can come up with. The person with the most names wins.
Baby Scramble answers: pacifier, diapers, rocker, bottles, spit-up, coffee, midnight feedings, maternity clothes, stroller, crib, highchair, onesies, bonnet, bunting, toddler, teether, rattle
Baby Bingo
Have guests guess what gifts the mom or parents will receive, and have them write them down on blank bingo cards. You can make these ahead of time by drawing a grid of five x five squares, giving you 25 empty spaces. (Make sure and mark the center one free in the traditional format of bingo.) As the gifts are opened, mark off what is received, against what was guessed. Whoever reaches ‘Bingo!’ wins! This is a perfect game for a larger group. After someone wins keep playing too, so you have more than one winner.
Secret, Secret, Who has the Secret?
Before guests arrive, write down one phrase that is the ‘secret phrase’. Example: Are you still pregnant? Or, You’re still here? Or, Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl? It should be a phrase that is commonly said repeatedly to a pregnant woman. The expectant mom can usually tell you a phrase she has heard a hundred times since she became pregnant. A pin of some type is needed to put on the people as they say the phrase. When someone says it, the pin is put on them, and they are told, quietly, what they said and why they are now wearing the pin. As each person arrives, if they say the phrase, the pin is passed to them and they are told to listen for the next person to say it. This is carried on throughout the party. Once you have the pin, you may not get it back. The one with it at the end of the party wins.
