Okay, here you are, one the verge of a night with someone’s kids and you don’t have a clue what to do. First and most importantly you need to be responsible, don’t kid yourself, babysitting is NOT for everyone! Below is a checklist of do’s and don’t’s to help you make it through the night in one piece!!
1. If this is your first time sitting for someone new, try to meet the parents as well as the child or children. That way the kids will know you before the night you sit with them. By doing this they are less likely to be nervous when you do actually sit with them. If they like you, then you both can look forward to seeing each other again, if they don’t you’ll just have to try a little harder.
2. Always try to be friends with the kids. They don’t need another parent. You can be friends and still make them respect and listen to you. Play with them, don’t just sit and talk on the phone or watch TV. If you want to watch TV, find a video or movie that all of you can enjoy.
3. Have a fun night, order a pizza or something fun. Take a vote on who wants what so everyone feels included.
A lot of times, kids think “Alright, my parents are gone and I can do whatever I want and I don’t have to listen to you”...... Not true, as far as that goes, you will have one miserable night if the kids don’t want to listen to you. Don’t feel bad about telling their parents about their actions when they return home. They will handle things from there and maybe your next night will be better for everyone.
4. Don’t invite people over when you are doing a job. Anything could happen and things could get totally out of control before you know it.
5. Make sure you know what to do and who to call in case of an emergency. Always have a backup: too many people on your side never hurts... be prepared.
6. It’s time to put the kids to bed. They may be a little scared with their parents not being home, don’t just drop them in their beds and tell them to go to sleep, read them a story or stay with them until they fall asleep if they want you to.
To be a GOOD babysitter you have to like children. If you don’t it will be harder to have the patience you need dealing with young children. Kids are very excepting and if you are kind to them and fun to be with , you will have no problem.
These are the most important things to know about babysitting. Just remember that someone is putting their trust in you to take care of the most important things in their life....their family. This is a very serious thing and if you remember what I’ve told you you’ll be a pro in no time!!
