Belly dancing is a little less popular today than it was ages ago in the ancient times, but it is still entertaining and is still a good source of exercise.

There are several kinds of dances, not just one basic belly dance. After all, that would be boring and every belly dancer has the artistic need to express themselves and to choreograph her own dance. There is a handkerchief dance in which a large handkerchief is used to wrap the dancer in an exotic, mysterious fashion. Periodically, the dancer removes the handkerchief from different parts of her body in order to reveal parts of her skin underneath. The end of the handkerchief is also twirled around, rolled up and slid across the arms, legs, and face. A veil is also used in belly dancing and it is used in much the same way as a handkerchief is.

Belly dancing is almost unheard of in some countries nowadays. But it is still performed in certain places though they are few and far between. Like most everything else, the dance has evolved from its original state and changed into a more modern form of art. Dancing this colorful, creative dance takes some sort of costume, headdress, veil or veil, and maybe even some finger cymbals. The costumes, in order to look more authentic, need to be colorful, and maybe covered with sequins or pearls. And, do not forget the exotic music which is played in the background while the dance is taking place.

A basic dance consists of seven separate parts. It may be shortened where limited time is a factor. Each part lasts as long as the musical number which is played along with it. The dancer usually enters the room completely covered with their costume, veil, or maybe handkerchief. She can dance to the stage or to the middle of the room and either remove her veil or handkerchief or leave it on and swirl, twirl, and generally tease the audience with it. The dancer usually performs twirls, whirls, and up and down along with sideways movements while flowing with the music that is played. Remember, the dance comes from within the dancer. With the belly section finally exposed, the dancer moves the hips in a full circular motion. Her hands should be in front of her slowly making motions along with her hips. Layering is known as adding a little shimmy onto the hip circles. Another move is a large, deep hip moving circle. The dancer bends over and makes a wide sweeping motion with her arms.

In order for you to learn some of these moves, it would be a good idea to watch your body in a full length mirror so that you can see what your movements look like to others. Practice your movements until you feel that they look right to you. That is, they give the effect that you are trying to achieve. This could be a sexy effect, just a mysterious effect, or a talented moving of the body. Practice belly dancing until you are confident enough to display your new skill.
