Once you discover you and your baby have yeast, or commonly known as thrush, you will want to promptly try to rid yourselves of this persistent fungus.
The most common treatment for thrush for yourself is applying a prescription cream called Nystatin, to your nipples. Your health care provider can prescribe this for you. They may also recommend an anti-fungal like Lotrimin on your nipples as well, but be certain to clean your nipples off before your baby nurses the next time.
This cream is applied liberally throughout each day for a consistent period of time. Stick with the treatment to ensure best results and follow you doctor and pharmacist's instructions.
But sometimes this treatment is ineffective. Some health care providers will prescribe a round of Diflucan, another prescription remedy. It is a pill taken for a prescribed period of time to fight the fungus in your body. Some women have luck with this while others do not. There is no way to know but it is an option.
Washing your underclothing and towels along with vinegar water is also effective in trying to get rid of the fungus. One-half cup of vinegar applied to your large load of laundry can help kill this fungus that is difficult to treat.
Some practitioners will tell you, you can try applying sugar-free yogurt to your nipples throughout the day along with taking acidopholus tablets each day. Yeast results from an imbalance in "good" bacteria in your body and acidopholus, present in yogurt, helps restore the balance necessary for good health. The tablets can be find in most health food stores and more frequently nowadays in some traditional grocery and drug stores.
Because thrush often results from antibiotic use near delivery of your baby or when treating an infection, trying to drink organic milk can work wonders as well. Some dairy sources may have residual antibiotics in the milk which will only help the fungus persist.
Your baby's signs of thrush appear as a white coating on her tongue. It does not only appear after nursing which can be a result of your breastmilk on the tongue. This white coating will not go away and cannot be wiped off. If you only treat yourself and not your baby the thrush will not go away. Your baby will continue to reinfect you and the vicious cycles will persist.
Ask your practitioner, but gentian violet drops can be applied sparingly to your baby's tongue. It will paint your baby's tongue purple and it will stain everything in sight. But it can be very effective in killing the organism. This remedy can be purchased at drug stores and health food stores.
Whatever route you take, check with your practitioner and remember to be diligent about the treatment plan.
