When most people hear the words “California wines” they think of Napa Valley. But there’s another wine region in California, Southern California, that is. Nestled in the rolling hills of Temecula are fifteen wineries producing a variety of red and white wines and champagnes. The jewel of Temecula’s wineries is definitely Callaway.
Ely Callaway (of Callaway golf club fame) founded Callaway Vineyard and Winery back in 1969, taking advantage of the breezes that cut through the hills in Temecula. Set atop a tall hill, Callaway visitors can overlook the orchards and vineyards that surround the winery. There are lush flowers and plants both inside and out.
For a small fee, visitors to Callaway can take a winery tour and taste from a generous selection of wines in a souvenir crystal wineglass. Callaway produces a broad selection of whites with a string of medals behind them, ranging from ultra-sweet dessert wines to a crisp Chardonnay and an incredible Viognier. Red wines were first introduced to the Callaway line in 1990, and include award winning Merlots, Cabernets and several unique blends.
Callaway proudly displays their many awards and medals in the tasting room. In the adjoining gift shop, you can buy wine and gourmet goodies, as well as wine-related accessories and clothing. After you’re finished shopping, there is an outdoor restaurant and a beautiful picnic area overlooking the sprawling vineyards.
For more information on the winery, go to Callaway’s website at www.callawaywine.com. There you can read about the winery, their award winning wines, find recipes to compliment the wines and even sign up for the Callaway Grapevine, their newsletter. You can also learn about upcoming special events and dinners at the winery.
