Camping is a lot of fun, and a great family activity. However, many people can be intimidated by camping and reluctant to attempt it. Camping can be as rustic and adventuresome as you like, but if you are just starting out, you can feel confident in knowing that camping is also a safe and fun way to spend a weekend.
If you have never camped before, you may not have all the necessary equipment. There is no reason you should have to spend a lot of money to get started though, as many camping and outdoor supply stores rent tents, sleeping bags and even back packs. The equipment that you need is actually basic for a weekend camping trip. You will need a tent large enough for everyone, sleeping bags, and pillows.
In addition, you should have food for three meals plus two snacks for each day that you will be gone. Large plastic storage containers made especially for camping are available, but you can also use plastic boxes with tight fitting lids if you plan to keep the food in your car. You will probably want to pack food that is simple to prepare and eat, such as a jar of peanut butter, a loaf of bread, tuna, and granola bars. You may also like to try some of the canned meals such as roast beef hash, that are commonly available in grocery stores. These can be heated up in a small saucepan over your campfire. Speaking of saucepans, you will want to take one along and probably a frying pan also, along with a knife and eating utensils.
A basic first aid kit should be prepared and taken along. It should contain an assortment of adhesive bandages, triple antibiotic ointment, moleskin (for blisters), Calamine lotion, sunscreen, and a painkiller. Any prescription medicine that is needed by family members should also be taken along.
Each person that is camping should also have a fanny pack or small nap sack to carry a snack and water in for hikes and outings away from the camp.
If you are just starting out, it makes sense to go car camping. This means that you will rent a camping spot in a state or national forest and be able to drive right up to that spot and set up camp. As you become more proficient, you may wish to go to a campground where you have to hike in carrying all of your equipment to get to your campground. Starting out, you will be glad that you have easy access to your car. Not only will you not have to unload and carry everything at once; it is also convenient if you learn that you have forgotten something.
If you are going to be at a popular campground, it would not hurt to call ahead and reserve a spot. Once you get to the campground you should pay for your spot and get directions to it. Once you are there, take notice of how close you are to the lavatories, water supply, and firewood. Now you are ready to unpack and set up your tent. Unless you are in an arid climate, you will probably want to bring along a tarp or piece of plastic to set on the ground under your tent. This extra layer between you and the ground can make the difference between a comfortable night and a damp sleepless night.
