The City of Cincinnati is known for the Ohio River, the country’s first professional baseball team, and it’s rich German Catholic heritage. But anyone who visits Cincinnati almost always ends up at the center of downtown, where they will find the city’s tallest building - the Carew Tower.

Built in the late 1920s, the Carew Tower was the idea of John J. Emery, Jr., the inheritor of a vast New York real estate fortune that was begun by his family in the late 1830s. Emery moved to Cincinnati in 1924 and became involved in the development of downtown Cincinnati in every way he possibly could. His idea for the Carew tower became a reality in less than 1-1/2 years, from the idea to the design to the construction.

At 49 stories tall, you can take a trip up the elevator all the way to the top of the light-brown-colored building, where you can get breathtaking views of Cincinnati’s riverfront along the Ohio River, Cincinnati’s East side,Cincinnati’s West side, and the rolling hills of Northern Kentucky.

Inside the Carew Tower you will find much of the original architecture from when the building was constructed around the time of the Depression, including very high ceilings, marble floors, and iron railings around each floor level. Today, many shops and restaurants cover the first three floors, including book stores, specialty gift shops, inexpensive fast-food, and fine-dining restaurants. Also connected to the tower is the very upscale Omni Netherlands Hotel. The floors above the first three include private offices and businesses.

Located at the corner of Fifth and Vine Streets, just across from Fountain Square, the Carew Tower is and always will be the center of attention in downtown Cincinnati. As new architecture continues to go up all around the Tower, it still remains the tallest building in the city - the building with the classiest architecture and richest history in a town proud of it’s heritage.
