Casseville is right on Wisconsin’s Great River Road’s drivable tour which is along the Mississipp river which is one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful rivers. Following this Great River Road you can see spectacular sites of the Mississippi River and on the river’s bluffs you are able to see fantastic views of limestone.
Before you get to Casseville you enter into a small town called Potosi which is known as the Catfish Capital of Wisconsin. While here you can tour the St. John Lead mine which is one of the oldest mines in Wisconsin. It was mined from 1827 to 1870. This mine is considered a National Historical Site. There are tours available to take of the lead mine. The tour provides information on equipment and mining techniques used 150 years ago. While here you can also rent canoes for use to take down on the Grand and Big Platte rivers.
As you get back on the river road you proceed to enter into Casseville. If you are a person who likes camping out there is a state park available to camp out the Nelson
Dewey State Park. Nelson Dewey State Park is a family oriented campsite. The campsite offers a fully equipped bathroom and shower facility. You can also see a spectacular view of the Mississippi river from the park. In the fall you can observe bald eagles which are migrating at this time. The park also offers 20 acres of land which has five of the original buildings on it from the time of Nelson Dewey who was Wisconsin’s first governor. You can take a tour of his home which has its original furniture in it from this time. There is also such buildings as the ice house and barn to look through on your own.
Right across from the park is the Stonefield Village which is operated by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The village is a replica of an 1890’s village. There is a
section devoted to farming of long ago. You can walk around a old farm house where there are people dressed up as frontier people. You are shown how things were done in the 1890’s, like grinding coffee beans and churning butter. You are also able to see gadgets like an old time radio and a sonograph. Also on the grounds you can view farm equipment of the 1890’s like plows, haybines and tractors. There are speakers at each station that, when pressed, tell you about the farm equipment you see and how it was used pertaining to farming at this time.
You can proceed to cross a beautiful wooden bridge which allows you to enter into a town of the 1890’s. They have all kinds of buildings there such as a grocery store which
is set up like a grocery store of the 1890’s with products and their prices of that time on them. There is also a clerk that shows you an interesting way people of that time paid for their grocery products. There is also a post office, a saloon where you are able to order drinks and get to experience how it would have been in a salloon of the 1890’s, a newspaper where you are shown how newspapers were made up in the 1890’s, a bank, fire house, railway station, school and many more shops.
Also close by to drive is such caves as the Crystal cave and Spook Cave to tour. The Crystal Cave is a cave with all kinds of crystal formations to view and Spook Cave is a
great cave to tour with for children. It’s a cave you see in boats since the cave is under rock formations.
