The Chihuahua is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. It is believed it was once the sacred dog of the Incas. It has also been mentioned that the American Indians enjoyed Chihuahua as a meal. Chihuahuas were once fierce little dogs living in holes in the ground, which could well account for their inclination to huddle together in every warm nook and cranny.
A Chihuahua is one of the world’s most popular dogs. It has proven to be a well behaved and consistently successful competitor in the show ring. But is a Chihuahua the pet for you?
The Chihuahua is keenly intelligent. It is very protective of its owner and quite cheap to keep. As it is one of the world's smallest dogs, it is a good pet to have if you live in a small unit without a yard. Chihuahua’s are both long and smooth coated, and come in a large variety of colours.
If you live alone and are seeking a gentle pet then a Chihuahua could be a great friend for you. They tend to cling to one owner, which makes them quite difficult to rear in a house full of children. They have a tendency to snap at children and strangers and are often too brave for their own good. I am sure if they were given the chance they would fight a tiger just to prove that size doesn't matter.
If you live in a cold climate you will have to consider a coat for the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is an inside dog and should not be left shivering outside in the cold at night. A Chihuahua is not designed for kennels, and it will be considered cruelty to adopt a Chihuahua if this is where it will reside. Because of the Chihuahua’s sensitivity to the cold they can be subject to rheumatism.
Chihuahua’s can walk great distances, or they can be carried great distances. This makes them excellent companions for the elderly and those who enjoy a strong daily walk. The Chihuahua is a good traveller and very portable. With its high intelligence and inexpensive maintenance, a Chihuahua can make a terrific pet. If you have children it is a good idea if the children are old enough to demonstrate responsibility.
