Like adults, children too have their own unique character. Some are courageous and friendly. Others are fearful and reluctant to getting into contact with strangers. Shyness can be hereditary. Moreover, an inappropriate education can make your children shy as well.

Are they shy?

Your children can become shy even at the age of three. Their behavior with their family, friends and strangers is the best way to find out whether they are shy indeed. If you agree with more than four of the statements written below, there is a ninety percent probability that your children are shy.

1. Your chidren stick to you whenever you talk with other adults or when you pay a visit.

2. They become restless when you or any other people for whom they deeply care, such as their grandparents, are missing.

3. They rarely speak and use simple words. Due to shyness, they may even stammer.

4. Your children start crying easily when you scold them.

5. They ask you to solve their problems.

6. They do not make friends and they find it hard to start a game or a conversation with other children. Therefore, they will rather play with children that are younger than them so that they feel in control of the situation.

7. Your children are afraid of objects and situations of which most children are normally not afraid, such as animals, insects, storms, and highness.

8. They wake up many times during the night.

How can you overcome your child's shyness?

Once you are sure your children are shy, you should act immediately. Here are some ways that you can use to help your children overcome their shyness.

1. Whenever they stay away from other children, talk with them gently and help them become friends with the other children.

2. Do not let them cry. Try to accustom them with the situations they are afraid of. For example, if they are afraid of a dog, go and caress that dog.

3. Do not force them to talk or face the situations they are scared of. For example, when you have guests, do not make them stay with the guests if your children are afraid of strangers.

4. Congratulate them when they overcome their shyness. It is very important that your children are self-confident. Do not speak in their name and teach them to take care of themselves.

5. Try to develop their qualities. It will help them get more confidence in themselves and overcome their shyness.

6. Contact a specialist or a doctor if you feel you need more help.
