Reading is the cornerstone of all success in school and work. We all want our children to be successful and to love reading. What are the best ways for parents to get their children excited about reading? This article will give some great ideas to accomplish this.
Introduce books while your child is still an infant. Get ones that they can chew on and play with and then you can read and point out large colorful pictures in it. This is the basis of good language skills and your child will look forward to it.
As your child gets older continue to choose books with very interesting pictures and a good, yet simple, story line. Parents should familiarize themselves with a variety of
children’s books, including interactive books, mystery, adventure and educational books.
When you read to your child, pick a quiet time at home and cuddle up and read a few books. Or, if your child is bored or agitated sometimes reading a book will change their
demeanor. Read in a fun animated voice, stopping often to talk about what is happening in the story.
Another fun way to get older children interested in reading is getting them into a book club. They can choose their own books and when they receive them at school or in the
mail it will be so exciting they will want to sit down and read right away. Your child will have pride of ownership and this is a plus too.
Tell grandparents and aunts and uncles to give your child books as gifts. A special book that is signed on the inside cover will be cherished and kept forever, while a toy will get broken and thrown away.
Taking a weekly trip to the public library is also very exciting for children. Let your children go up and down the isle choosing what books they want. You can also
supplement the selection with some classics and some of your old favorites. When parents have to read the same books over and over to their children they get bored and
will stop reading to them.
Making a trip to the library solves this problem, making
reading fun and exciting for parents too.
