There are many different factors to take into account when choosing a church or place of worship, and this can often make it a very daunting task. The main factors most probably being - location of the church, size of the church and its congregation, and whether or not the church’s theology and doctrines support your beliefs. You also need to take into account things like your age and family situation and whether or not the church offers programs to suit your needs.
The first things to consider when looking for a church are the easy things. Ask yourself “How far am I willing to travel?” Once you have answered that you can narrow down your search to a certain area. Most people want a church fairly close to home so that they can not only get there easily, but also be a part of the church’s community and work they do in the area. Some people don’t mind travelling a bit further to find the right church. It is really a matter of personal choice.
The next thing to consider is the size of the church. Would you feel more comfortable in a small family environment church, or a bigger church? Once again this is really up to your own taste and what you would feel most at home in. Perhaps if you are uncertain, you could check out a few churches of different sizes and see where you feel most at home.
It is important that you find a place of worship that has a similar belief system to your own. You will not be happy in a church if you do not support the church’s beliefs or the work they are doing. The church’s denomination maybe of importance to you too. Many people for various reasons feel more comfortable in a certain denomination more so than in another. If this is you, then narrow your search to within the denomination that you choose. For the most part though, as long as the church and its leaders have the same beliefs and doctrines as yourself and as you would like in a church, then the denomination should not be an issue. For this reason, when considering a church, it maybe a good idea not just to go to a service at the church but also to talk with other members of the church and especially with the church leaders or pastors etc. This will enable you to see if they support your own belief system and if you feel comfortable with their teachings.
Lastly you need to feel at home in church. Naturally this will not happen the first few times you go there but you need to see it as a community that in time you will be able to settle into. If you are young this should probably mean there are people your own age. If you have a family you should consider if there are other families and programs for you children to be involved in. You should also find the church environment is warm and friendly and the people there are welcoming.
Finding a church can be daunting and perhaps you will look into many before you find the right one for you. Nothing in life is perfect, and even churches will have their downfalls. If you don’t feel comfortable somewhere, don’t hesitate to go somewhere else. The main thing is that YOU feel comfortable and at home there, so if you don’t find that with one church, keep trying until you do. The right church for you is out there somewhere!
