Cinnamon cutouts have been decorating and scenting my holidays for longer than I can remember. They are one of the simplest crafts to make, yet they offer a delicious scent for quite sometime, not to mention the lovely homespun look. Here is a basic recipe and a few tips to make your ornaments that much more special and easy to use.

Recipe

2 ¼ cups ground cinnamon

¼ cup white glue (school or craft glue will work)

Approx. 1 ½ cup water

Additional Materials

Mixing bowl

Large wooden spoon

Waxed paper

Rolling pin

Cookie cutters

Baking sheet

Straw

Assorted ribbon

Set aside ¼ cup of cinnamon for sprinkling on work surface. Mix in bowl remaining cinnamon, glue, and ¾ of water. Add remaining water as needed, until mix resembles cookie dough. Chill in refrigerator for about two hours. On flat surface, sprinkle some cinnamon, and with half of dough, or an amount you can easily work with, roll out with rolling pin until about ¼ inch thick. Add cinnamon as needed to keep dough from sticking. Do not use flour! Cut out various shapes with cookie cutters. When you have finished all the cutouts, and before they have dried, take straw and poke a hole in top of each one. Set cut shapes aside on wax paper on baking sheets for several days, until dry.

When thoroughly dry, tie ribbon through holes and hang as desired. Keep in mind that these are not just for Christmas, but depending on what cookie cutter shaped you use, can also be a great decoration at Halloween, hearts on Valentines, Thanksgiving, or any holiday!
