Coyotes & wild animals: caution is needed

Coyotes & wild animals should be treated as wild and with caution. Some people call them coydogs, some call them coyotes. Which ever name you choose, always use caution when near one.

The word "coydog" is used to describe a mix of an eastern coyote and a domestic dog. In actuality, this cross breed is less common than realized. What people are referring to as coydogs are more than likely eastern coyotes. When you mention them it usually arouses a picture in peoples minds of a coyote sitting near a cactus and howling at the moon. Their habitat, however, is no longer limited to the southwest, as they are now native to the entire United States and into Canada. They have been found running wild in New York City which is a testimony to their adaptability and lack of fear when it comes to crowded areas.

Many of us in the east, however, still have the mindset of referring to the coyote as a coydog. However you refer to them, there are a few things you should be aware of.

Though a close encounter between a human and a coydog is rare, when it does happen it can be a dangerous situation.

You should not approach the coydog as they can be unpredictable and can have potentially vicious behavior. Whether coydog or coyote, they are wild animals and should be approached as such.

Their presence in residential areas is increasing as their populations are increasing. They are scavengers and will approach food sources such as garbage dumpsters or picnic areas. They tend to go after smaller livestock herds, such as rabbits and sheep as opposed to cows or deer. They will, however, prey on a weak or fallen larger animal. Be aware that the presence of livestock or game in your area will add to the chances of coydogs being nearby.

Their call at night is very eerie and piercing. It is a howl combined with yipping.

Their increasing population makes for a greater possibility of human encounters. If you see one in your residential area, especially during daylight hours, contact your local animal control officer.

Do not let your own curiosity get the best of you. Whether you call them coydogs or coyotes, remember they are wild animals and caution, and respect, is called for when you are in their presence.
