Cribbage is a board game dating back to the seventeenth century and the English poet, John Sucking(1609-1642). John Suckling is said to have been a wealthy man and a foremost cardplayer. He has been attributed to inventing and naming the game. The game probably evolved from Noddy, which is similar to cribbage except only 5 cards are dealt. English settlers brought cribbage to their settlement in America. Today, cribbage is played all over the world and is popular in British pubs. There are many cribbage clubs and tournaments. You can even play online.
To start, you need a cribbage board. Cribbage boards come in many different styles, but they all have the same total of points in some combination, 61(once around) or the grand total of 121 points. They come in wood, ceramic, and also in travel sizes. There are holes on the board and each player gets two pegs to keep score.
It can be played with two or more people. When two people are playing each person gets dealt six cards. Cut the deck and lowest card is the dealer. In your hand look for combinations of cards adding up to fifteen. At the end of the hand, each fifteen counts as two points. Also, runs are used such as 2,3,4 and flushes. After looking for the best cards to keep in your hand, the players must put 2 cards into the dealers "crib" which is an extra hand for the dealer that is counted after the other hands. After everyone puts the cards in the crib, the non-dealer cuts the deck and the dealer picks the top card to put on top of the deck. That card can be used to make points in conjunction with your hand. If a Jack is picked, the dealer gets 2 points. Play begins when the first player starts the count by putting down one card and the next player goes adding onto the first card(such as 4, next player puts down a 6 so he says 10, next player puts down a 5, so its 15 (that player gets 2 points for a 15 during the play)and continues until one reaches 31 or closest to 31. The player that gets 31 gets to move his peg two points. Continue to 31 again until all cards are played. Each player then adds up all their "15s" and any runs, pairs, etc. The pegs are then moved that number. The dealer has two hands to count(his hand and the crib). Play continues with the next dealer until the end of the board is reached.
