A vast majority of the population are pet owners. Many of us have at least one dog in our families. It is wonderful to come home after a busy day to a loyal, loving pet. Dogs love us unconditionally, although it is too bad they are not potty trained. Smaller breeds generally spend a lot of time in the house, either having free reign of the house or in a kennel when the masters are out of the house. Medium to larger breeds generally prefer to be outside, it is not confining like the indoors. Since dogs love to enjoy the outdoors why not make an area for them? This way your lawn can stay in good shape.
Firstly, if you have a fenced yard your task will be easier. The fence can serve as one side of the dog run. Try to ensure a spot that isn’t in direct sunlight for large portions of the day. Instead choose a shady spot, dogs get hot much faster than we do. Once you’ve picked your spot for the dog run it is time to go to the store.
For an approximately 16’x8’x6’ high dog run with a fence serving as one side, you will need about 35 - 40 garden ties. They are usually available in olive or terra-cotta color. You will also need some cement, get a medium sized bag and mix it yourself. Next, purchase a roll of chain link fencing according the selected footage. The green vinyl coated fencing looks nice and it is very durable. You will also need to purchase a gate. These are also available in the chain link style to match the dog run.
Now that you have all your supplies you are ready to start building your dog run. Start by digging your holes for your posts. Space them out accordingly to the desired length between posts. Once all your holes are dug you can begin placing the posts in the ground. Make sure to have your cement mix ready when you insert the posts. When placing the posts it is good to have another person to hold the post up. Then take a garden spade and scoop your cement mix around the post in the hole. The posts can take a while to set up. If you prefer you can do the cementing as the last step. At any rate, once the posts are in place you can begin placing the garden ties horizontally to create a ranch style looking pen. Leave under a foot space between each tie. Using six garden ties will bring the height of the dog run to approximately six feet.
Follow these steps for each section between the posts. Once the garden ties are all in place then you can attach the chain link fencing. It is best to use large staples or horseshoe shaped nails to hold the fencing securely. Be sure to stretch the fencing as much as possible before attaching it to the posts. Lastly, attach your gate in the desired spot. Now your dog run is complete. Using these guidelines for your dog run will save you an enormous amount of money.
