Erik Axel Karlfeldt, recipient of the 1931, was born in Folkarna, Sweden. His father, Erik Erson Karlfeldt, was a lawyer, and his mother was Anna Jansdotter Karlfeldt. He was educated at the University of Uppsala. He worked as a librarian before becoming secretary of the Swedish Academy.

Karlfeldt published his first book, VIDMARSK- OCH KARLEKSVISOR, when he was 29. Some of his most well-known poetry can be found in his 1906 collection, FLORA OCH POMONA. He was offered the Nobel Prize in 1918, but he refused it because he felt too many Swedish writers received the prize.
