Gabriela Mistral biography

Biography of Gabriel Mistral, recipient of the 1945 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Vicuna, Chile to Petronila Alcayaga and Jeronimo Villanueva.

Gabriel Mistral, recipient of the 1945 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Vicuna, Chile to Petronila Alcayaga and Jeronimo Villanueva. Her original name was Lucila Godoy Alcayaga. Her father left the family when she was three years old. She was educated at the Santiago Normal School. She worked for several years as a teacher before become the principal of Santiago High School in 1921.

Her reputation as a poet was established with her first publication, SONETOS DE LA MUERTE (SONNETS OF DEATH), which was published in 1914. She was the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Gabriela Mistral died of cancer in 1957.
