Garages were once nothing more than a place to park you vehicle and toss all the gear and clutter that goes with home ownership such as lawnmowers, rakes, and assorted toys and tools. Once it was all piled inside we would shut the door and forget about it until the next time we needed to find something. Thankfully, with the busy lifestyles that many of us live, organization systems have crept into this area of our lives with leaps and bounds. Grid organization is a perfect system for garages due to the numerous ways they can be personalized for each user’s needs.

Before heading to your local hardware or home store to buy a system to install, take a realistic look at your garage and its contents. What is your garage made of and what will you need to do to the walls, if anything, to attach the grid storage system panels? Each panel in a system is usually two by four feet and can be combined in any combination or layout of your choosing to make a wall system as small or large as you need. With prices for each 2X4 grid ranging from the mid twenty dollar range to upwards of seventy five dollars, it will pay you to shop around for the best deal on the actual system grids and attachments.

Also necessary, realistically assess the contents of the garage and any other tools or items you plan to store in your newly organized space. If the area is a jumble of assorted items, haul it all out and sort before you begin. Make three piles: one to keep, one to toss, and one for items that are either going to be stored elsewhere, returned to owner, or sold.

Once you have an idea of what you plan to store, purchase the grids and all the assorted hooks, racks, and baskets that will make up your personalized structure. Some different attachments to consider for inclusion are holders for specific items such as:

- Ski rack that will hold a pair of skis along with hooks on the side to hang your poles

- Bike hook that will allow you to hang your pedal bike to reclaim floor storage

- Fishing pole holder

- Garden rack and basket to harness all your assorted garden gear including rakes, shovels, and a basket to toss in small items such as gloves

- Golf rack and basket with hooks not only for your golf bag, but even your shoes

- Sports rack and basket to gather up balls and assorted sporting equipment in one easy to find spot. Includes holders for specific items such as baseball bats, gloves, and cleats

Besides these and other task specific attachments and holders, numerous attachments will organize just about anything you can think of that you might want to store.

- Big work hooks that are large enough to hang small trolling motors and medium sized electric tools

- Assorted sized shelves with attached hooks to store paint cans, fertilizer, sprays, and other objects that cannot be hung or that you would not want to toss in a basket

- Everything hooks to store rakes, shovels, post hole diggers, tool belts, hammers, and more by themselves

- Oversized everything hooks to store several items stacked together such as a rake, shovel, and hoe all on one hook

If you have a garage that is in serious need of organization, consider a grid storage system, as they are truly one of the easiest systems to put into actual use.
