The Great Pyramid, the world's oldest structure, is the oldest and largest of all the pyramids. It is the largest and greatest of three immense pyramids on the Giza plateau near Cairo, Egypt. The odd thing about this pyramid is that it does not contain a pharaoh's body, or any hidden treasures. But it does contain internal passages, chambers and other features that no other pyramid has.
The Great Pyramid has been the subject of many far-out claims down through the centuries. It has been connected to pyramid power, Atlantis, curses, Stonehedge, space aliens, Biblical prophecy and even the Bermuda Triangle. It is also said that the Great Pyramid contains the knowledge of the past, present and future.
How did ancient man build the pyramids?
As of yet nobody has discovered any blueprints or records of any kind of the actual construction. Some believe that whoever made up the plans for the pyramid had knowledge beyond that of a mortal man. For instance, the pyramid faces north and is built at the exact center of the Earth's landmass. Scientist and historians marvel at how ancient man could know this.
It is said that the pyramid features are so large they can be seen from the moon. The base of the pyramid is almost large enough to fit ten football fields inside. Its peak is as high as a stairway with more than eight hundred stairs. The pyramid is thirty times larger than the Empire State Building.
Each stone weighed as much as four cows, so how were they able to lift the huge stones to the top of the pyramid? Historians believe they pulled them up a ramp on sleds. Nobody knows for sure, but we do know that it took 20 years to build a regular pyramid. Today, in our modern world, a pyramid could be built in less than a year.
The outside of The Great Pyramid was covered in a ravishing, protective layer of beaming stone called, "casing stones." They were so sparkling they could be seen from the mountains of Israel hundreds of miles away. After a 13th century earthquake, some of the casing stones were loosened. The stones were taken by Arabs to use for their palaces and mosques.
Today, over four thousand years later, the great pyramid still stands in Egypt and tourists come from all over the world to see the only Ancient Wonder of the World still standing. It remains one of the Earth's greatest mysteries.
