First, if paint is peeling off the fascia of your house, you will need to paint the fascia first before you install the gutters.
You can purchase different lengths of gutter from a home improvement center. These lengths will have seams, and you can only get them in white and aluminum colors. You can also have them made "seamless" by a gutter making company, and use these lengths to install yourself of have them install the gutters for you. You can then pick from an assortment of colors available, but if this is not a major concern, install the white shutters and do it yourself.
If you have them installed professionally, it will cost much more than if you installed them yourself. The trick here is to save money. To do the installation yourself, drive a nail into the fascia at one end of the wall 1/2 inch below the top of the fascia. Attach a mason's line with a line level. Level the line. Drop one end of the line 1/4 inch for every 25 feet of fascia length and drive a nail to mark the drop. Snap a line between the nails to show where the top of the gutters will be.
Fasten gutter brackets and their fittings to the fascia with wood screws so the top of each bracket aligns with the chalk line. Space the brackets at 2 foot intervals. Slide each gutter section into place, engaging it with the brackets and fittings. Slide each successive section into the end of the previous one, joining them with connectors. Cap the end of the gutter to direct water to the downspout. At each downspout location, fasten a drop outlet to the bottom of each gutter. Attach an elbow and a short length of downspout to carry the run to the wall, then add an elbow and longer sections to extend the run to the ground.
Anchor the downspout to the wall with two brackets screwed to the wall, one at the top of the downspout and the other just above the foundation. Attach an elbow to the bottom of the downspout and place a splash block underneath it to prevent water from eroding the soil and to divert it away from the foundation.
If your house doesn't have a fascia and the ends of the rafters are exposed, nail the gutters to the rafter ends. Snap your sloping chalk line on the ends of the rafters. Then attach the gutter brackets, aligning the tops with the chalk line.
Some metal gutters come with spikes and ferrules instead of brackets. They are also laid out along a sloping chalk line. Attach them by fitting the ferrules inside and across the gutter. Fit the spikes into the ferrules. Then drive the spikes into the fascia. If there are any scratches or marks where the paint is chipped off after installation, buy a good rustoleum paint such as Red Devil and retouch the spots. You can also purchase screening to place on top of the gutters that will keep the leaves and debris out.
Once every 6 months, place a ladder on the house and climb up and clean out the gutters. This will keep the water running freely to the ground. They also sell downspout sleeves to attach to the end of the downspout, these have holes and when the water runs down the downspout, it will trickle through the holes and water your lawn and garden area.
