At the end of October every year, along with the taste of apple cider and cake donuts, one night you can always hear the sounds of children laughing and shuffling along as the dried, fallen leaves crunch underneath their feet.

Along with these familiar sounds drifting on the crisp, fall air, you will see trick or treaters of all shapes, colors, and sizes.

Halloween is a fun time of year for children of all ages, but it can be even more enjoyable if it is a safe event as well. Parents or guardians should make sure their little ghosts and goblins are prepared when they go out trick or treating. Find out how you can prepare your children by reading and following the Halloween Safety Tips below:

Tip 1- Small children, of course, should be accompanied by an adult or an older child.

Tip 2- If you are going to make your children's costumes, make sure the holes for their eyes are big enough so they can see well.

Tip 3- If you are going to purchase costumes for your children, check the clothing tags. Make sure the costumes are flame retardant.

Tip 4- You should also put strips of reflective tape on your children's costumes so they can be seen at night.

Tip 5- Whether they are homemade or store-bought, make sure your children's costumes do not drag on the ground. This could cause them to trip and fall.

Tip 6- Be sure that your children carry a good- working flashlight with them if they are going to be out at dark. This will help them to see as well as be seen in the dark.

Tip 7- Remind them to walk, not run on the sidewalks, and stay off the streets unless they are crossing at the corners.

Tip 8- Remind your children to watch out for vehicles and to obey all of the traffic laws.

Tip 9- Children can be given a cellular telephone to take with them, especially if they are going to travel to another neighborhood, so they can call you in case of an emergency.

Tip 10- Know where the area is that your children will be trick or treating in.

Tip 11- Make sure the area they are going to visit is well lit at night.

Tip 12- If your children are supposed to be home at a certain time, make sure one of them has a watch that is in good working order.

Tip 13- Instruct your children to stay with the group and not to wander off alone.

Tip 14- Instruct your children to never go inside someone's house when they are trick or treating.

Tip 15- As hard as it may be for them, instruct your children to wait until they get home before they eat any goodies they have collected.

After your children have arrived home safe and sound, make sure to check over their candy, fruit, and such before you let them eat any of it.

Unfortunately, there have been occasional news reports in the past years concerning people finding hazards in the edible things that their children have brought home from trick or treating.

By following these simple tips, your children can have a fun-filled Halloween, and you can rest a little easier knowing that you have done your best to prepare them as well.
