Harry Martinson, co-recipient of the 1974 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Jamshog, Sweden. His father died when he was 6, and his mother left soonafter to live in America. He spent his childhood in numerous foster homes. As a young adult he worked as a merchant seaman and a laborer.
Martinson wrote 20 novels and several collections of essays, poems, and short stories. His first book of poetry, SPOKSKEPP (GHOST SHIP), was published when he was 25. He became internationally known for his epic ANARIA which was published in 1956. As a writier he was associated with the literary group Fem Unga.
Harry Martinson died in Gnesta, Sweden in 1978.
