Hermann Hesse, recipient of the 1946 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Calw, Wurttemberg. He was the second child of Johannes and Marie Hesse. He was educated at the Gymnasium in Bad Cannstatt. Later he worked as an apprentice in a bookshop.
Hesse wanted to be a poet from the age of 12. He published his first collection of poetry, ROMANTISCHE LIEDER (ROMANTIC SONGS), when he was 22. The same year he published his first prose collection, EINE STUNDE HINTER MITTERNACHT (AN HOUR BEHIND MIDNIGHT).
Hermann Hesse died in Montagnola in 1962.
