Do you have a headache or a migraine? Headaches have baffled doctors for years. But a migraine is a different kind of headache and a different kind of pain. Migraines are most common in women between the ages of 30 and 45. They are believed to be caused by stress, hormonal shifts (like serotonin), certain beverages, alcohol, and certain foods and especially believed to be related to the menstrual cycle. What happens during the migraine headache is the blood vessels in the head constict then quickly dilate. Only rarely are migraines headaches caused by something more serious such as an aneurysm. Symptoms include severe head pain, throbbing on one or both sides of head, changes in vision, sensitivity to light, sounds and smell, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.
Migraine headaches may be hereditary. To avoid them or lessen your chances of bringing one on, avoid caffeine, foods high in salt and MSG. When you get a migraine take pain relievers and drink plenty of water if you are not nauseated, try to get some rest. You may have to sleep in a semi-upright position to avoid pressure in your head. Try to stay in a darkened, well cooled room, that is quiet, as well. If all else fails and the migraines persist, see your doctor.
