Traveling in Ireland is a wonderful experience. It is so different from the typical vacations many of us embark on. The sights are interesting, the history engaging, and the people are very friendly.
The only drawback was the lengthy flight, but it all depends where you are departing from. Flying from Canada is a nine-hour flight to London, followed by a forty-five minute flight to Dublin. Once you recover from the jet lag after a couple of days, you are in for a great holiday. Dublin is a large city, it is quite busy. O’Connell Street in Dublin is where the action is. There are many shops, restaurants and pubs. In the middle of O’Connell street there is a large canal that flows through the city, making the street seem wider than most. There is much hustle and bustle here, double-decker buses, loads of traffic and friendly people. An experience you won’t forget.
Once you leave the city and visit the outskirts it is very different. Small towns with quaint pubs and cobblestone streets abound. You can walk down the street and view all of the old style buildings. Some of the housing have the old style thatched roofs, many of them offering bed and breakfast facilities.
Carickfergus is an interesting town, just a short drive out of Belfast. You are close to the sea here and again the people were very friendly. It offered good shopping and old style buildings to see.
Blarney village is just a few miles from Cork City. Here is where the Blarney castle is situated. The flora is breathtaking on the grounds. The castle is a must to see, and while you’re there be sure to kiss the Blarney stone. Be sure to bring a flashlight if you want to venture into the dungeon of the castle, it is not lit. Also make sure to wear good shoes since the ground tends to be slippery. The accommodations are good in Blarney village or you can stay in Cork. Although, speaking with the locals can be a challenge since they have a very thick accent.
The Giants Causeway is a sight to see. It looks as though someone at one time strategically placed round smooth rocks on top of one another in a vast space in a staggered fashion. It is a truly amazing sight. Another breathtaking sight is the Cliffs of Moher, which are high cliffs covered with lush green overlooking the sea. A beautiful view of the sea for many miles.
There are many castles in the countryside to see, some barely standing and some in amazingly good shape. In Ireland you will never go thirsty, it seems there is a pub every few miles. If you plan to embark on a holiday in Ireland be sure to take in some of these amazing sights.
