Juan Ramon Jimenez, recipient of the 1956 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Moguer, Spain. His father, Victor Jimenez, was a banker. He was educated at the Jesuit Academy in Cadiz and studied briefly at the Univeristy of Salamanca before moving to Madrid. He worked for twenty years as an editor of several literary journals. He later allied himself with the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War.

Jimenez began writing at the age of 15 and published his first book of poetry, ALMAS DE VIOLETA, when he was 19. He was the leader of a literary group which referred to themselves as the "modernistas."

Juan Ramon Jimenez died in Puerto Rico in 1958.
