BIOGRAPHY
Kenzaburo Oe, recipient of the 1994 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Ose, Japan. His father died during World War II when he was nine years old. As a youth he received a militaristic formal education, but he learned of his village's culture from his grandmother. He later attended the University of Tokyo where he studied French literature.
Oe's first short story, SHISHA NO OGORI (LAVISH ARE THE DEAD), was published when he was 22. His first novel, MEGUMUSHIRI DOUCHI (NIP THE BUDS, SHOOT THE KIDS), was published a year later. One of his most famous books, KOJINTEKI-NA-TAIKEN (A PERSONAL MATTER) was based on his experiences with his mentally handicapped son, Hikari. The theme of deformity is found in many of his other works as well. He has produced several short story collections, essays, and more than 20 novels and was the second Japanese writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
