Knut Hamsun, recipient of the 1920 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Lom, Norway. His original name was Knut Pedersen. His father, Peder Pedersen, was a tailor, and his mother was Tora Pedersen. He had almost no formal education and worked for his uncle for most of his early years. Later he taught school. As a result of his support of the Germans in World War II, he was put on trial for his views. The charges were eventually dropped because of his age.

Hamsun published his first book, DEN GADEFULDE, when he was 18. He gained recognition as a writer with his 1890 publication, SULT (THE HUNGER).

Knut Hamsun died in Norholm, Norway in 1952.
