The Bayfront abounds in seaside ambience and it made for a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Good Old-Fashioned Lakefront Charm

Today, the Bayfront is a quaint place to visit. The District includes those destination points along the waterfront, from Niagara Pier to the East Avenue Boat Launch, and is a blend of ship yards, art galleries and dockside eateries. There has been just enough modernization along the way to transform the former industrialized-area to a more tourist-friendly setting. The marinas are full of sailboats, their naked masts waving in the air. The restaurants have names like "Smuggler's Wharf" (814-459-4273), "Rum Runners" (814-455-4292), and "Shakespier" (814-452-6607), and most have transient dockage for boaters.

Erie is involved in a renaissance. It is a wonderful town that is getting better with age. The Bayfront area is luring visitors to enjoy its beauty and fun. A quick stop at the new "Welcome Center" (87-PORT-ERIE), can lead you in the right direction for your bayfront experience. The Maritime Museum (814-452-2744) is the new home of the Brig Niagara when it is in port. You can also view original artifacts, photography, videos and a live fire exhibit that recreates how wars were waged on water. Climb the stairs, or ride an elevator to the top of the neighboring Bicentenial Tower at Dobbins Landing.

The Bayfront is alive with things to do! Need your excitement fix? A daytrip to the lakeside Waldameer Amusement Park and Waterworld might be the "ticket!" You can "experience" the new "Ali Babba." This ride sweeps you up on a "magic carpet," seven stories high, and then plummets your carpet, free-falling back down!

Too much excitement? How about a day at the beach? Presque Isle State Park has seven beaches, one is handicapped accessible. From the beach you can see the Brig Niagara when it is in port at the Bayfront. If you are interested in history, visit the Erie Maritime Museum At the Museum you can discover who said, "We have met the enemy and they are ours!" Learn about this historic quote when you come to the museum.

Remember, if you need any information about more places to visit in Erie, call the "Welcome Center" at 87-PORT-ERIE.
