When the average person thinks about cards, the first thing that pops into their mind is poker. Now just what is this game called poker. Poker is a card game based on chance, and tries your luck at every turn. The great thing about the game is that all you need to play is a deck of cards and at least one other person unless you have access to a computer. If you've never played the game or have just forgotten your basic rules just keep reading.
Ok, let's start with the basic rules of poker. Out of the 52 cards you can break down the high cards and the low cards. The highest card is the ace and simply goes down from there (Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1). Now that you know the difference between high and low cards, let's talk suits. There are four different suits in poker; clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades. You'll learn more about the importance of suits when I talk about the variety of hands you can win with in poker.
When you are dealt your cards, you will always have five cards to show at the end. These five cards are what will decide who wins and who loses the game. There are a variety hands that can win the game, so I'll list the best hands first and go down from there.
1. Five Of A Kind: Five cards bearing the same number is the highest hand you can ever have. For example, you get five eights. It doesn't matter what suit or color, as long as they are the same number. The highest five of a kind you can have is five aces. Note: this hand is only possible when playing with wild cards.
2. Straight Flush: This is where the suits come into play. This hand is when someone receives five cards of the same suit that also go in order. Say, 3,4,5,6,7 of hearts.
3.Four Of A Kind: This is simply four of the same cards. As the five of kind, four aces is the best you can have. (Example: 10,10,10,10,8)
4.Full House: A full house is three of the same cards and a pair. (Example: 10,10,10,3,3)
5.Straight: This is when you have five cards that go in order, but this time it doesn't matter what suit they are as along as they go in order.
6.Three of A Kind: Three of the same cards
7.Two Pair: This is when you obtain one pair of cards and then a totally different pair of cards. (Example: 10,10,3,4,4)
8. Pair: Two of the same cards
9. High: This is when no one has any special hands. You simply look around for the highest card. Ace being the highest card.
To make it a little more fun or risky you can usually throw in a wild card or two. A wild card is any card you choose that can change into any card during that hand. Say you choose a one eyed jack, during that hand you can change that Jack into any card you desire.
As you get advanced you'll learn a thing or two about bluffing and how to read other people's faces. Bluffing is when you have a horrible hand, but pretend to have a great one to make the others fold. As you play with more and more people, you'll learn a few things about the game that someone just can't explain. So the best thing for you to do is just get out there and play.
