Homemade cat or dog food is actually healthier for your pet than store bought food. The store bought brands often contain chemical preservatives. Homemade food can be made with fresh ingredients that your pet needs for optimum health. Also, the best brands are pricey to buy, especially if you have more than one cat or dog.

Let's start with how to make your own pet food if you have a cat. Cats can be picky eaters, but if you feed them what they like and what they need to be healthy, then they'll be happy.

Cats are basically eaters of meat, poultry, and dairy products. But, they need a certain amount of vegetables in their diet too. Of course, if you stick a carrot in front of your cat, it's going to think you've lost your mind! So you'll need to steam, mash, and sneak vegetables into your cat's bowl to get him or her to eat them.

It's easy to think of different menu ideas for your cat. You can mix a can of tuna fish up with some finely chopped hard boiled eggs to make a tasty meal for them. Or, you could add some vegetables that you have steamed and mashed to some fresh salmon.

If your cat has a health problem, such as constant diarrhea, for example, you can add some boiled rice to their diets to help relieve the condition. To help get rid of fleas, you can sprinkle a little garlic powder in their food too.

When you are deciding on your cat's menu, don't include human foods, spices, seasonings or condiments that they shouldn't have. Items of this nature include meatloaf, spicy foods, mashed potatoes, chocolate, onions, tomatoes, et cetera. A human's digestive system can handle items that a cat's cannot.

Here's an easy recipe for liver that your cat is sure to love!

Chopped Liver

You can either pan fry or boil the liver in a pan of water. Either way works fine! But, if you pan fry it, make sure that the liver doesn't get hard and crusty. Then, puree the liver in a blender. Serve it to your cat as needed, at room temperature, and refrigerator the leftovers for up to a week.

Dogs aren't picky eaters like cats are. But, just like cats, they still love their meat, poultry and dairy foods. Here's an easy recipe to make for your dog:

Turkey and Vegetables

Boil a pound of chopped or ground turkey in a large skillet or a pan with water. Once the turkey is cooked clear through, add some steamed, chopped vegetables such as green beans, peas, carrots, red beets or potatoes. Mix thoroughly and serve at room temperature; refrigerate the leftovers for up to a week.

Again, as with your cat, if your dog is having problems with diarrhea or fleas, you can add some rice

or sprinkle some garlic in the turkey and vegetables.

Your meat and poultry choices aren't limited to just liver and turkey. Both dogs and cats love beef, lamb, pork, ham, and chicken too!

Sometimes you'll need to add a little grain into your pet's diet as well. This can be easily done by using rolled oats, wheat germ, et cetera.

And finally, you can easily add vitamins to your dog or cat's homemade food too. Just measure and pour in a liquid vitamin. Or, crush tablets up and mix them in well.
