All people are not perfect, this is a well-known fact. So it only goes to show that because people are not perfect, their relationships cannot be perfect either. We imperfect human beings tend to forget this important fact at various times in our lives, especially when we are in love with another imperfect human being and we intend to marry them. We unrealistically expect our relationship, our marriage, to be perfect, or near to it.

While our marriages cannot be perfect, they can be rich with happiness and fulfillment because they are based on love. Sometimes, though, being only human, we let the importance of love in our marriage become lost among the complexities of life. And, with that, the flickering light of love tends to become dim, and maybe even go out, if we let it. Since marriage is based on love, without its glowing light, the marriage becomes cold and dark.

The light doesn't need to go out in your marriage. You can keep the love alive and that special light burning brightly in your relationship by following some basic tips for a good marriage.

The most important aspect of a loving marriage is good communication between both partners. Good communication is essential in learning and understanding each other's thoughts, beliefs, fears, needs, interests and expectations. Expectations, of course, need to become more realistic as the marital relationship develops over time.

Married couples can only communicate with each other when they spend time together. So "time" is another important aspect of keeping your love alive. Time spent talking and sharing memories with each other is essential.

Sharing--another important aspect of keeping love alive. Couples need to share the good times as well as the bad times that inevitably happen in every marriage. It's easy to share the wealth, happiness, and joy, when life smiles upon us, but we must also stand by our partners through the storms of financial hardships, illness, and strife.

A successfully loving marriage is a two-way street of give and take. You have needs and your partner has needs too. Hopefully, your life-long companion is someone who's strengths are your weaknesses, and vice versa. You should compliment each other instead of being in competition. Marriage is not a competitive race, but rather a loving partnership between two people.

Lastly, the Bible tells us to be humble and gentle, to be patient with each other, making allowances for each other's faults because of your love for one another. It also tells us that love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves, and love never fails.

Do your part to keep the love alive in your marriage. Tell your spouse often how you feel about them, that you love them, why you love them, and that you want to spend the rest of your life with them and why. Emphasize the positive aspects of your marriage. Don't focus on the negative aspects.

Remember that love is a positive emotion and that love is patient and kind. Also, remember that love never fails, no matter what. And because of these warm and wonderful aspects of love, your marital love can shine brightly forever.
