The modern day legend of the Men In Black (or MIB as they came to be known) began to gain prominence in the 1960’s.

This prominence was triggered when the owner of a popular magazine, The Space Review, abruptly ceased publication in late 1953. He ended the magazine’s publication with a statement that he had solved the mystery of UFOs. He further explained that he was not able to divulge his findings as he had been “ordered” to keep silent. He also warned other persons engaged in research on the subject to “Be very cautious”. When pressed for more information, he would only relate that a month prior he had been visited by 3 men who allegedly worked for an agency of the U.S. Government. They had explained completely to him the nature of UFOs and had also threatened him with imprisonment if he divulged what they had told him.

The suddenness of this action fueled many rumors and also a few books. Within a short time these 3 “government” agents were being identified as Demons, Aliens, and even as representatives of the international banking community.

As interest grew, so did the number of reported “harassments”. Reports from New York, Ohio, New Mexico, Virginia, and Connecticut began to find their way into the press and literary world. These reports were not confined to the United States. A report from Mexico alleged an experience with MIB. A young pilot, after reporting a close encounter with a UFO (which was confirmed by radar screens at the Mexico City airport) in 1975, was on his way to a television studio to be interviewed about the incident. 4 men in black suits forced his car to the side of the road. They warned him not to discuss the incident further. A month later he was again confronted as he was on his way to discuss the matter with a prominent U.S. astronomer.

The legend of the Men in Black could very well have been the result of earlier interrogations carried out by the military (Army Air Force) after the Roswell incident. In this instance, military and civilian personnel were threatened with punishment if they were to reveal any knowledge they had acquired. In that uncertain time after WWII, it is understandable how the military would react with a knee-jerk policy. It is also understandable how the legend could grow: each new version multiplying the powers and the attributes of the MIB.
