Joining a mother’s support group is full of rewards. It will benefit not only you, the mother, but your child as well. It allows many mothers the opportunity to build new friendships, get involved in the community, attain skills or maintain their currents skills, and access to expert or professional figures.

Build New Friendships

Joining a mother’s support group is a great way to make new friends. For mothers who have left the workforce to be at home full-time, it’s a great way to meet mothers who have made the same choices. Mothers who have recently moved to the area, may find it useful in getting to know other mothers in the neighborhood. Not only does it give the mother an opportunity to meet new friends, but your children can make new friends, also. Many groups meet for a weekly play date at each other’s homes.

Involvement in Community Projects

A lot of the mother’s support groups are regularly involved in community service projects. Most of the community service projects evolve around children. One group, for example, may be involved in helping homeless children with food and clothing. Or one group may be involved in mentoring children in group homes. Participating in community service projects help the members to become aware of the needs in their community. It sets a good example for their children on caring about the welfare of others.

Attain New Skills or Enhance Currents skills

Another benefit in joining a mother’s support group is the opportunity to build new or enhance current skills. Many offer interest groups where you can learn or teach hobbies, such as needlework or scrapbooking. By becoming an officer you can build leadership, bookkeeping, and secretarial skills. If you already have these skills through your profession, you could volunteer these services to the group. Join subcommittees on planning events or fundraising to gain or utilize skills in this area. This is especially helpful for mothers who are currently at home full-time who’d like to retain their professional skills.

Access to Expert or Professional Figures

At regular meetings there is usually an invited speaker who is either an expert or professional in the topic area. For example, there may be a nutritionist, child psychologist, or pediatrician who makes available information that you may otherwise have to pay for. Topics could range from discipline techniques, appropriate diets for children, how to recognize communication disorders in your child, and so on. Meeting topics are chosen to educate and inform mothers.

There are many incentives in joining a support group. The new friends made and the skills attained can last a lifetime. The knowledge received can also contribute to perfecting your family and home. The rewards from membership in such a group are endless.
