Let's face it, moving can be a very stressful experience. Things get lost, broken, damaged or forgotten. If you're facing a move, try one or two of these helpful tips and reduce some of the stress.
1. Need boxes? Call around to local shops and grocery stores and ask when they receive their deliveries. On those days, after they've unpacked the new merchandise, the stores are left with lots of empty shipping boxes. Chances are, they will be more than happy not to have to dispose of all those boxes themselves! Give them a call on shipment days. You may find that you're able to get all the sturdy boxes you need, with the added bonus of having different sizes to choose from.
2. Pack one room at a time and label each box with a bold black marker. This may sound like a no-brainer, but it makes things a lot simpler if you take a few minutes to clearly mark what each box contains. This way you won't have to search through dozens of boxes looking for just one item. And all the things that belong in each room will be packed at one time, making it easier to be sure that nothing is overlooked or forgotten. When you arrive at the new place, simply put each box into the corresponding room.
3. Zippered plastic storage bags are a great help! Small items like jewelry boxes or trinkets can be stowed inside and zipped shut. If the item inside tips over and spills, the storage bag will keep everything from falling out and being lost. These bags are also great for packing things like bath salts, powder, things that can leak, sprays, etc. You'll find many uses for these convenient bags. They come in different sizes, too.
4. Nest items. For example, small bowls can be wrapped in dish cloths and stowed inside larger bowls. Then wrap the larger bowl in a dish towel and pack. Many items can be nested. Just be sure to place newspaper or some other packing material between breakables. Nesting saves a lot of space!
5. Breakables such as knick-knacks, pictures, vases and ornaments can be wrapped in wash cloths, towels, sheets, or pillow cases. Larger items can be cushioned in blankets. By wrapping items in things that will have to be packed anyway, you save money on packing material. Carefully place the wrapped items in boxes, tape them shut and mark the boxes.
6. Pack your personal items last. Clothing, jewelry, bath and personal items and medications are things that you will need to have handy. Who wants to have to dig through boxes looking for something? Keep these items neatly stored but accessible until the last minute.
Nothing can alleviate all the stress and headaches of moving but using these simple tips can take away some of the aggravation.
