Moving is one of the most stressful experiences you’ll ever have. That’s why it’s important to take things one step at a time and not let it overwhelm you. In actuality, moving can be quite simple, if you know how to do it right.

First things first. You need to find where you are moving to. Before selecting a house, apartment, or condo, you should check out the area. Is it accessible to your job? How far is the closest hospital? If you have children, is the schooling adequate to your needs? These are some important questions you need to ask yourself. Just make sure you know what you’re getting into.

Packing is a major thing. You should spend a week or two just randomly packing boxes or crates (whichever you plan to use). Pack things you won’t be needing for the next few weeks. Take these boxes to the new place if you can, but pile them up in a corner of your current place if you have to. But when you have about three days before your move, get going on the packing. Remember to keep things organized. You don’t want to find clothes mixed with cooking utensils.

You’ll also want to inform the post office, your bank, and anyone else that sends mail often of your new address. The post office should be able to forward your mail for a year. This will give you time to contact everyone of your new address. And don’t forget, before you leave your place have the phone, water, electricity, or any other utilities shut off, or else you’ll be paying for a service you’re not using.

When the big day comes, you have two options. Hire professional movers (can cost up to thousand of dollars) or move yourself. I’d pick the latter, simply for the cost. It’s pretty simple, call up some of your closest, and strongest, friends and ask them to come help out. In return, offer them a meal when they’re finished. Depending on how much you have to move, it should only take an hour or two. And you should definitely rent a truck a few days in advance, or else you’ll end up making several trips back and forth.

Above all else, just take it easy. Keep remembering that you’re going to get through this, and it’s not going to be that bad.
